Whether you gravitate toward quiet fishing trips or breathtaking kayak tours, anglers and paddlers can choose from lakes, fishing ponds, and the majestic Potomac River for water-based activities.

Paddle a canoe alone or with a friend from Leesylvania State Park, or enjoy a group tour of the Occoquan River on the Miss Rivershore pontoon boat. Enjoy catch-and-release fishing in any of the ponds at Manassas National Battlefield Park. Or try stand-up paddleboarding at Lake Ridge Park, where your body is perfect sync with the water, only inches beneath your feet.

Paddling the Potomac

Danny Barker has been known to drive around Prince William with two kayaks racked on the roof of his car. When people ask him where he's kayaking, he's always happy to point them to all the places around Prince William. Barker founded Penguin Paddling (, which offers kayak and paddleboard tours and rentals.

Locust Shade Park

This scenic and serene eight-acre pond is chock full of fish sure to please every angler. The pond is stocked seasonally with trout and catfish, and naturally occurring blue gill, largemouth bass, and crappie can be caught here as well.

Lake Ridge Park

Lake Ridge Park offers boat rentals three seasons a year for a variety of water experiences. Available boats include jon boats with motor, rowboats, canoes and kayaks (including tandem kayaks), paddle boats, and paddle boards.

Guided Seasonal Canoe Tour at Leesylvania State Park

Rangers at Leesylvania State Park can take you on a guided canoe tour of Powell's Creek, which borders the park and connects with the Potomac. Wildlife, marsh plants, and a scenic railroad bridge can all be seen on the tour.
